Not that long ago I was in one of those beach shops looking at surfboards. Most of them did not feel very high quality and looked like they were mass-produced. That got me wondering, who makes high-quality surfboards and which ones are made in the USA? I was happy to find many companies. Here is a list.
- Savage Surfboards in NC
- Grain Surfboards in Maine
- Clever Surfboards Florida
- Orion Surfboards Florida
- Almond Surfboards California
- Bing Surfboards California
- Degree 33 California
- INT Surfboards California
- Proctor Surf California
- Sharp Eye California
- Walker Surfboards California
The owners of Savage Surfboards, located in Wilmington North Carolina, have over 70 years of combined experience in the surfboard industry. Their boards are handmade and created from the highest quality materials available. They have boards for everyone from the beginner to World Champions.
Grain Surfboards in York, Maine. Yep. Surfboards in Maine is something I did not expect to find but these are some of the most beautiful wooden boards on the market. All the wood comes from a small mill in Maine and they have a few demo boards you can try before you buy at their shop in Maine or at their Los Angeles location.
Clever Surfboards are shaped and designed by former professional surfer Jay Smith in Edgewater, Florida. We did not see the option for a custom board but the other options will be enough for most people. Clever boards are sold through dealers around Florida and a few other places. Check out their website to find a dealer near you.
Orion Surfboards is also located in Edgewater, Florida, and also shaped by a former pro. Greg Geiselman has helped develop an extensive line of boards regardless of talent level. From beginner to pro there are over 15 options on the website for you to choose from
And then we have the surfer state of California topping the list. We found 7 companies making boards here but are certain there are many more. As we find them they will be added to the California state listing on the website.

You will notice you don’t see any companies on the list from Hawai’i and the reason for that is we are writing an entire story on them. There are so many shapers from the North Shore that trying to add them here would be an injustice.
Finally, after getting that perfect board you will want to protect it with a bag from Sagebrush in California. These are environmentally friendly bags that are limited run so when you find one you like, you better get it.
